R. Velusamy: Mahindra XEV 9S redefines innovation through true inclusivity –

The company’s next big leap into electric vehicles is shaped by real customer stories and daily realities in India – showing that an SUV is more than just a body style; It’s a state of mind.

Author: T. Mulally

Mahindra’s electric SUV journey has rewritten the script of the Indian electric vehicle market and its electric SUVs have now covered over 200 million kilometers. Mr. R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Managing Director, Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd., said that two-thirds of the owners drive their vehicles at least 20 days a month, which proves that these electric vehicles have transcended curiosity and become a part of daily life. More than 9,000 customers even drove 400 kilometers in a day, validating Mahindra’s promise of genuine 500-km range and 20-minute fast charging. In just seven months, 30,000 electric SUVs with Mahindra’s iconic design were sold, marking a major milestone in the history of electric vehicles in India.

However, “Mahindra soon realized that something bigger was going on. Customers were no longer buying electric cars because of the attention they attracted (likes, clicks or social buzz). They were buying them out of love. They emotionally connected with the cars and wanted them to reflect who they were, their aspirations and how they wanted to be seen. This shift from ‘attention’ to ‘love’ has become central to Mahindra’s thinking on future electric vehicles,” noted Mr. Velusamy.

Conversations with customers reveal deeper truths about the Indian market. A northern businessman wants a “big, commanding Mahindra electric SUV”. A family from Delhi wanted a larger vehicle with a true third row that would allow every passenger, not just the driver, to enjoy comfort, functionality and space. These insights once again prove that in India, SUVs are not just a body style but a state of mind. It represents confidence, ability, family togetherness, a sense of freedom and the belief that you can go anywhere, anytime.

To meet these changing expectations, Mahindra turned to the INGLO platform – an Indian global architecture designed for the future. The result, Mr. Velusamy said, is a new 7-seater electric SUV – XEV 9S – built around the real needs of Indian families. The new SUV offers a spacious cabin, a flat floor, a lower center of gravity for better ride and handling, and a quiet driving experience that allows passengers to “hear their inner voices.” He noted that the vehicle’s range of more than 500 kilometers, 20-minute fast charging, and support from 180 high-speed chargers deployed eliminate the biggest concerns about electric vehicles.

The real novelty of this SUV is its focus on inclusivity. Features are designed for everyone in the cabin, including second and third rows, with thoughtful details like screens and charging options for children. At its core is “the most powerful idea in the automotive world today” – a suite of advanced technologies that enhance the entire driving experience.

Mahindra’s new 7-seater E-SUV is built on real customer insights and built on the INGLO platform, giving everyone the freedom to participate and explore more. Mr Velusamy added that it blends Mahindra’s heritage with modern technology, comfort and strong on-road performance, showcasing the true appeal of an electric SUV to India’s next generation of drivers.

Pratap Bose: XEV 9S design is purposeful, carefully crafted and full of emotion –

Author: T. Mulally

Mahindra’s latest SUV, the XEV 9S, is not just manufactured, but crafted with a design philosophy that blends emotion, precision and imagination. Mr. Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer, Automotive and Agriculture Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said that behind every curve and surface lies a clear belief: A great SUV must feel dynamic, iconic from a distance and create an emotional connection the moment you see or sit in one.

The 9E and 9S are the clearest examples of this philosophy in practice, adding that the 9E’s coupe silhouette and signature taillight graphics have made it one of the most instantly recognizable shapes on Indian roads. Its sibling, the 9S, draws inspiration from the same family DNA, with a rear design so unique that it was Mahindra even before the logo appeared. Together, he said, the two models make a “perfect pair,” each unique but sharing the same design soul.

Mahindra roots its design philosophy in the 9S – nine universal truths that balance art and engineering. From silhouette and stance to sensual materials and sci-fi technology, these principles ensure that each SUV has a refined, recognizable identity that is both emotional and iconic. No matter how complex the process becomes, he says, every Mahindra SUV always starts with a sketch—a burst of creativity that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Mr. Bose said the XEV 9S was designed to make the silhouette sporty and dynamic, which is the essence of an SUV. This gesture exudes power and turns heads wherever you go. The surface flows smoothly, like the continuous brushstrokes in a painting, while the details are treated like tiny jewels, enriching the vehicle’s personality.

There’s a “big” feel inside the car – wide visibility, plenty of cabin space and materials that look and feel sensual. Advanced technology is carefully layered to give the cabin the magic of an airplane cockpit.

Inside, the focus turns to comfort, light and emotion. Maximum space for each occupant, with special attention to footwell, seat travel and ventilation. The third row is designed to be a real seating space, comfortable enough even for long journeys, not just short ones. Light also plays a big role, with a large glass roof and generous quarter glass creating a bright, inspiring cabin. Materials and colors are chosen with the same care “a fashion designer chooses fabrics,” Mr. Bose said.

Even the base version avoids the typical “entry-level” feel. He reiterated that the OEM believes that no customer should feel like they purchased an inferior version. Exterior color is considered a personal signature, leaving a lasting memory wherever the vehicle travels.

Collaboration

Mahindra’s design is also deeply collaborative. Teams in India and the UK worked together and came up with ideas that were appreciated even in studios across the globe. “Every millimeter of the SUV has been carefully designed, from the width of the dashboard to the color of the stitching. Digital modeling supports this precision, with suppliers working closely with the company to ensure that the final vehicle on the road matches the designer’s original vision,” said Mr. Bose.
