Range Rover Electric: A new era for the original luxury SUV

Published:

Known as the original luxury SUV, the Range Rover has entered a new era with the introduction of electric propulsion. Built in Solihull, home of Range Rover since 1970, the first all-electric Range Rover marks a significant milestone in the history of the brand.

Combining Range Rover’s signature design and luxury with advanced electric performance, the Range Rover Electric delivers a quieter, smoother and more responsive driving experience, with more torque than any Range Rover before it. Its electric powertrain further enhances the model’s renowned qualities of effortless performance, timeless luxury and uncompromising capability, while significantly reducing cabin noise for an even more refined journey.

Integrating electric propulsion seamlessly into a flexible architecture that was engineered for it from the ground up, the Range Rover Electric features twin permanent magnet 260 kW electric motors producing 405 kW and 850 Nm of torque. Most Range Rover customers will be able to complete their normal daily trips without the need to recharge thanks to a range of up to 600 km (WLTP)1 and real-world range of up to 535 km4.

Martin Limpert, Managing Director of Range Rover, said: ā€œThe Range Rover Electric is the result of a decade of thoughtful engineering and technological development, setting a new benchmark for the original luxury SUV. Electric propulsion is perfectly suited to the exquisite refinement of the Range Rover, enhancing the feeling of calm and secluded sanctuary for the occupants.

“At the same time, the breadth of Range Rover’s capability has not been compromised thanks to the combination of a powerful, adaptable electric powertrain and advanced chassis technologies that make each Range Rover unique, accomplished and desirable. We have also extended our testing and development programs beyond the original intention to ensure that Range Rover Electric is truly the most efficient Range Rover ever.”

New technologies enable precise control in all environments, including Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) that distributes rear torque from 100 percent to zero percent to prevent loss of traction, and Integrated Traction Management (ITM) that controls motor speed within 50 milliseconds and manages slip up to 100 times faster than its ICE vehicle counterpart.

Integrated Traction Management works in conjunction with the new Single Pedal Mode to provide owners with exceptional control to smoothly pull up steep slopes up to 33 degrees – as steep as a black-diamond ski run – or complete a rolling climb up to 45-degree slopes.

Matt Baker, Vehicle Engineering Director, JLR, said: ā€œThe defining characteristic of the Range Rover Electric is its ability to perform with effortless comfort and sophistication on every surface. We have worked tirelessly to ensure it retains those qualities. From challenging low grip and rough terrain to smooth, high-speed roads, it remains incredibly composed and refined with a real sense of control and confidence. The responsiveness and precision of the new driveline control systems, enabled by electric propulsion, make its entire We are very proud of the outcome.ā€

Range Rover Electric combines high-performance EV technology, advanced connectivity, extensive testing and locally developed manufacturing capabilities.

Fast Charging: Using a 350kW DC rapid charger, it can charge from 10-80% in about 22 minutes or up to a WLTP range of 220km in 10 minutes. Battery and Powertrain: It has a 118.5 kWh usable lithium-ion battery with 344 prismatic cells and 800V electrical architecture. Twin 260 kW permanent-magnet motors deliver strong performance and superior efficiency through silicon-carbide technology. Performance: The SUV can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and 80-120 km/h in 2.7 seconds. Connected Features: The new Range Rover app allows owners to remotely check charge and vehicle status, locate the car, activate cabin purification and operate features like a heated steering wheel. Extensive testing: The Range Rover Electric has covered more than 1.5 million km and undergone more than 250,000 hours of virtual and physical testing, covering extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to desert heat. Thermal Management: The ThermAssist heat-management system can add up to 40 km of range while reducing heating energy consumption by up to 40%. Battery Safety: JLR has developed rigorous battery testing, including vibration and shock testing from -40°C to +90°C. Each vehicle also gets a battery digital twin with over 900 diagnostic data points. Warranty: The electric powertrain comes with a warranty of eight years/160,000 km. UK Manufacturing: Production is based at JLR’s Solihull facility, which has undergone major electrification upgrades. Around 9,000 staff have been trained for electrification, with another 1,500 trained across the wider West Midlands. Enhanced production: JLR has added 13 battery and electric-drive-unit manufacturing lines, supported by AI-enabled quality inspection as well as extensive conveyor, power and data infrastructure. Availability: Orders are open in multiple configurations, including Autobiography, SV, SV Ultra and SV Black, as well as First Edition and custom personalization options.
