OHM Global Mobility, the e-mobility arm of Ashok Leyland, has deployed 130 air-conditioned electric buses in Chennai under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) electric bus programme.
The newly deployed buses are the first batch of 500 electric buses that OHM will supply and operate for MTC as part of the second phase of the Global Mobility programme. The buses are manufactured by Switch, the electric vehicle subsidiary of Ashok Leyland.
130 electric buses were flagged off at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, MTC Managing Director D. Mohan and senior OHM officials.
OHM Phase 1 demonstration in Chennai
The latest deployment is based on OHM Global Mobility’s operations under Phase 1 of Chennai’s electric bus programme.
According to the company, its electric buses deployed during the first phase have collectively covered a distance of more than 3 crore kilometres. The Phase 1 depot has also achieved more than 99% schedule adherence, highlighting the company’s focus on operational reliability.
Target to add 500 electric buses in Phase 2
Under Phase 2, OHM Global Mobility will gradually deploy the remaining electric buses across Chennai. The company will also provide fleet operation and maintenance services as part of the program.
“The launch of the first 130 buses under Phase 2 is an important milestone towards Chennai’s sustainable public transport,” said Brijesh Gubbi Suresh, CEO, OHM Global Mobility.
He said the company’s Phase 1 operations have demonstrated its ability to combine electric mobility with operational reliability.
OHM said it will support the expansion through its capabilities in electric mobility, fleet operations, vehicle maintenance and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solutions.
