According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), retail sales of electric passenger vehicles (PV) in India grew by 94.56% year-on-year (YoY) to 36,108 units in September 2026, compared to 18,559 units in the same month last year.

On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, electric PV retail sales grew by 17.63% from 30,696 units in August 2026. The strong growth pushed electric passenger vehicle penetration to 8.5% in September 2026, compared to 7.6% in August 2026 and 5.7% in September 2025.

FADA attributed this growth to the momentum of the early festive season, a wide range of electric vehicles from mass automakers and growing consumer acceptance of EVs.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles maintained its position as the leading electric PV manufacturer, registering retail sales of 14,791 units in September 2026. This represents 100.72% YoY growth from 7,369 units in September 2025 and 12.41% MoM growth from 13,158 units in August 2026. Tata Motors continued to gain the largest share in India’s electric passenger vehicle market.

Mahindra & Mahindra stood second with 7,780 units, registering a 95.82% year-on-year growth from 3,973 units in September 2025. Its sales also increased by 20.36% MoM to 6,464 units in August 2026.

JSW MG Motor India stood at the third position with sales of 5,242 electric PVs during the month. The automaker recorded 9.14% YoY growth and 13.41% MoM growth.

Vinfast Auto India, a relatively new entrant to the Indian market, recorded 2,964 units in September 2026, up 34.79% from 2,199 units in August. Its September sales were significantly higher than the six units recorded in September 2025.

Kia India retailed 1,262 electric vehicles, marking a 95.66% MoM growth from 645 units in August and 111.04% YoY growth. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki India recorded 1,104 units, down 21.81% from 1,412 units in August 2026.

BYD India retailed 836 units during September, registering a growth of 35.93% YoY and 53.96% MoM. Hyundai India recorded 792 units, up 52.02% year-on-year.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 218 electric vehicles, while Mercedes-Benz recorded 125 units. Stellantis Automobiles India registered 55 units, followed by Volvo Auto India with 45 units.

September’s sales performance highlights the continued expansion of India’s electric passenger vehicle market, with higher retail volumes, increasing penetration and a broader mix of models contributing to the segment’s growth.
