  • MEYLE launches shock absorbers for Tesla Model Y, expanding the electric vehicle after-sales market –

MEYLE launches shock absorbers for Tesla Model Y, expanding the electric vehicle after-sales market –

MEYLE has expanded its leading product portfolio with a new shock absorber kit for Tesla Model Y, complementing the existing product range for Tesla Model 3 and addressing a growing market gap. This new development combines enhanced driving comfort with reliable stability. Additionally, an improved design of the front shock absorbers helps reduce installation time in the workshop.

“As an SUV, the Model Y carries significantly more weight on the road than a conventional sedan and is often subject to high stresses during daily driving. This is also reflected in the suspension,” explains Sönke Schwenck, Head of Cooling, Filters and Damping at MEYLE. Feedback from the Tesla community, as well as Consumer Reports, indicate that the driving experience, especially on earlier models, is often considered uncomfortable. We address both of these issues in product development: increasing performance and increasing comfort without compromising driving stability.

This reinforces the strong business opportunities in the independent aftermarket. Shock absorbers usually fail around 80,000 kilometers, depending on driving conditions and individual usage patterns. This creates huge potential, especially for vehicles like the Tesla Model Y. The development of the new MEYLE shock absorbers was driven in part by feedback from many Model Y drivers who found the stock suspension uncomfortable.

    Optimized damping, high stability

In addition to high-quality materials, MEYLE shock absorbers have optimized characteristics that absorb road bumps more effectively than original components. Independent testing by DEKRA also confirmed the greater stress resistance of the shock fork. More balanced damping characteristics also help reduce stress on surrounding suspension components such as control arms and bearings, an important factor since these components are prone to wear in the Model Y.

Reliable performance even in cold temperatures

To meet the specific requirements of electric vehicles, the shock absorbers are coated with corrosion-resistant cathodic dip paint. The specially formulated oil ensures consistent damping performance even at low temperatures, which is particularly important for the Nordic market. A reinforced housing and 16mm piston rod further enhance durability in demanding conditions.

Save installation time by modifying the design

The front shock absorber adopts a two-piece C-shaped design, based on the bracket of Tesla Model 3, and has been further developed and modified specifically for the installation requirements of Tesla Model Y. While the OE part has to go around the tight space around the driveshaft, the MEYLE shock absorber can be installed from the side. Extended piston rod threads, included installation materials and oval socket wrench help speed installation, saving shop time and increasing profitability.

Growth Opportunities: Electric Vehicles in the Independent Aftermarket

According to Mordor Intelligence*, the European automotive aftermarket will grow from $107.8 billion (2025) to $126.2 billion (2030), driven in part by growing demand for electric and hybrid vehicle repairs. With this new application for Tesla Model Y, MEYLE further expands its presence in this growing market segment.

MEYLE shock absorbers for Tesla Model Y are suitable for all model years of the vehicle and will be available at specialty retailers from May.
