    When Tata Motors launched the Sierra.ev, it wasn’t just launching another electric SUV. It showcases the potential of electric cars made for India – practical, powerful and packed with technology that makes daily life easier.

    Sierra.ev runs on Tata’s most advanced electric vehicle platform, connecting the motor, battery, chassis and cloud systems into a single smart unit. It supports 5G, receives over-the-air software updates, and has access to more than 70 connected apps. This is a car that keeps getting better after you buy it.

    how does it look

    The front has been redesigned compared to the ICE version. Body-color and black plastic sections are swapped, giving it a cleaner, grille-free appearance. The Tata logo lights up and a light bar on the front of the car also acts as a charging indicator when the car is parked. The Sierra.ev has a tall, boxy body, a short hood, a long cab and a boxy rear – typical SUV proportions. The wheels sit on the edges, giving it a wide, stable look.

    Sierra.ev was driven fast at the CoASTT High Performance Center in Coimbatore. The dual-motor all-wheel drive unit produces 504 Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds in Boost mode. Six terrain modes – including Sand, Mud, Rock Crawl and Snow – allow the car to adapt to different surfaces. Off-Road Assist automatically manages the car’s speed so the driver only has to steer. Ride quality is comfortable regardless of road conditions – potholes are well absorbed and the car feels stable at highway speeds.

    Range and charging

    The 75 kWh battery is rated for a practical range of over 500 kilometers. Quick charging using a DC fast charger can charge the battery from 20% to 80% in about 26 minutes and increase the range by 263 kilometers in just 15 minutes. The battery comes with a 15-year warranty and no kilometers limit for private car owners. Android Auto’s built-in smart route planner tracks the car’s energy levels and suggests charging stations, making long drives less stressful. Google Maps integration shows estimated battery level when arriving at any destination – a useful feature for planning longer trips.

    Safety

    A 540-degree surround-view camera system displays everything around the car on the infotainment screen, including what’s directly beneath the car. The L2+ ADAS suite offers 22 driver assistance features, from adaptive cruise control to lane keeping. The augmented reality head-up display projects navigation arrows and driving information directly onto the windshield.

    The rear seats are roomy. Although the battery pack is located underneath, the floor is only about an inch higher than the ICE version, meaning passengers won’t feel squeezed. Legroom for rear passengers reaches 973 mm. Boot capacity is 622 liters, expandable to 1,257 liters with the rear seats folded, and is accessed via an electric gesture tailgate. There’s also a boot – 35 liters for the all-wheel drive version and 55 liters for the rear-wheel drive version – which can be used to store charging cables and small items. The driver sits high, overlooking the road.

    Soft-touch materials are used in key areas of the dashboard, with a fabric-covered soundbar covering the front. A three-screen layout combined with a head-up display clearly displays speed, speed limits and navigation directions. The panoramic glass roof is the largest in its class, letting in plenty of light and making the cabin feel open.

    The Arcade.ev suite offers more than 30 applications for gaming, streaming, and browsing. AirConsole turns the infotainment screen into a multiplayer gaming console, using your smartphone as a controller, which is great for charging with family members. Dolby Atmos sound on Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker JBL audio system and a SonicShaft soundbar complete the entertainment package.

    Connectivity

    DrivePay is India’s first in-car UPI system that allows passengers to pay for charging, FASTag, food and shopping directly through screen or voice. The iRA.ev app adds over 70 smart features to ensure safety, security and everyday convenience. Smartphone, NFC card and remote key fob access are all standard.

    One feature I couldn’t try before leaving is that the Sierra.ev comes with a disc-shaped key fob that lets you summon the car out of tight parking spaces. Press and hold the button and the car will move forward on its own, and when you release the button, the car will stop.

    Fit and finish could be improved as panel gaps and plastic fittings are inconsistent in places. But the overall package is practical and capable.

    The Sierra.ev offers everything families need – daily city commutes, weekend getaways and long highway drives – without asking them to compromise on space, comfort or performance. Every journey. Every terrain. Every mood.

    Tata engineers didn’t just put batteries into SUVs. They rethought the entire car from the ground up, and the result is the fastest Indian-made electric car to date.

    Here’s a tricky problem that most people never consider: A car needs to deform slightly in a crash to protect everyone inside. But it also requires a large, heavy, rectangular battery somewhere. It still had to seat five people comfortably and have enough room underneath to handle rough roads. This was exactly the conundrum Tata engineers faced while building the Sierra EV. Their answer is not to make everything bigger or harder. Use every bit of space wisely.

    The Sierra’s wheelbase is 2,730mm, which is quite roomy for a 4.3m car. But extending the wheelbase is just the first step. The harder question is how to squeeze the maximum number of batteries into that space without turning the car into a death trap in a crash. Mr. Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer and Head of High Voltage Programs and Customer Care, Tata Passenger Cars Electric Vehicles, said the answer is to “disperse the impact forces in three different directions: under the car, A on either side of the windshield columns and rack-and-pinion steering. By spreading impact loads rather than transmitting them through the battery, engineers avoid the hassle of adding heavy reinforcements along the length of the battery, which means more space for the actual battery, and you have to be very precise so that no additional reinforcement is needed along the entire length of the battery.”

    The battery itself is packaged in a cell-to-pack design — skipping the intermediate module layer used in most battery packs — to deliver an energy density of 141 Wh/kg. That’s a meaningfully high value for a vehicle of this size, and it goes directly to the Sierra’s range-core 75 kWh capacity.

    Electric vehicles are generally heavier than gasoline vehicles, which tends to impair performance. “However, the Sierra EV is around 200kg lighter than the Harrier EV. This weight advantage, combined with the lower location of the battery and near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution over all four tires, translates directly into driving feel. The result is a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.8 seconds, making it the fastest Indian-made electric car on sale today, and evidence of the kind of solid handling typically associated with more expensive cars. “When Tata pulled a stock plug-in straight off the production line, unmodified, and sent it onto the desert dunes, it succeeded,” Mr. Kulkarni said.

    Range isn’t just about battery size, though. The Sierra EV quietly incorporates several efficiency measures that most buyers will never notice. Brushless DC motors for front cooling fans consume less power than conventional motors. An electronically controlled expansion valve – ETXV – optimizes the flow of refrigerant between the battery and cab according to demand at a given moment. The passive integrated heat exchanger reduces the pressure in the AC condenser, making the compressor work easier, without consuming electricity, just smarter thermodynamics. Add a fully optimized flat underbody for cleaner airflow, refined regenerative braking and improved throttle response, and it all adds up to a MIDC-certified range of 665km. He explained that in real-world driving, this number stabilizes at a reliable 500 kilometers or more.

    Recharge keeps pace with these ambitions. At 1.6C between 20% and 80%, the Sierra can regain approximately 300 kilometers of practical range in approximately 25 minutes. To put it in perspective: a run from Pune to Bangalore means only one stop, which takes about as long as a cup of coffee and a quick bite to eat. Mr Kulkarni’s contention is that this should be the only car a family needs – not a second electric car for use in the city alongside a petrol car on the highway, but a car that can handle everything seamlessly.

    Safety

    Safety also goes beyond the star rating. Mr. Kulkarni calls it Integrated Safety Management, and the idea is that the car reacts to what’s going on around it, not just to a collision that has already occurred. Picture this: Your car automatically brakes to avoid hitting a stationary truck ahead. The driver behind you didn’t react in time and hit your car from behind, pushing you toward the truck. The Sierra detects a second reduction in its front clearance and brakes again to cushion the secondary impact. At the same time, it pre-inflates the airbags to protect the driver’s chest and face, and automatically makes an SOS call to emergency personnel after a collision. He emphasized that this is a system designed for how accidents actually occur in the real world, rather than just modeling accidents in laboratory tests.

    Inside, the engineering precision continues. The team carefully balanced the front and rear overhangs to maximize cabin space while maintaining enough shoulder room so five adults don’t feel like they’re sitting in a tumble dryer. He mentioned that the Z-axis (ground clearance, battery height, floor thickness, seat height) was equally carefully stacked to keep occupants high enough for easy entry and exit without pushing up the roofline and ruining the car’s proportions.

    In terms of materials, he says high-strength steel is used where the structure requires it, soft-touch surfaces cover everywhere where hands naturally land, and a large proportion of interior plastic trim uses recycled materials – without any obvious compromises in appearance or durability. It’s a small detail, but it embodies the same basic philosophy that runs throughout the car: do more with less, more carefully.

    Tata Motors has revived an iconic nameplate with the all-electric Sierra.ev, which has a real-world range of more than 500 kilometers, sprints from 0 to 100 kilometers in 5.8 seconds and an interior that feels more like a living room than a car. Bookings are now open with prices starting at Rs 18.79 lakh.

    Tata Motors has revived one of its most popular names and given it a thoroughly modern electric heart. When the new Sierra.ev was launched, the company described it as the most advanced and desirable version of its SUV to date. Bookings for the SUV are now open and deliveries will begin on July 15, 2026, with an introductory price of Rs 18.79 lakh.

    Tata believes that electric vehicles in India are at an inflection point, transforming from a niche option for early adopters to a more mainstream option, helped by growing customer confidence, lower total cost of ownership and rapidly improving charging infrastructure. Mr. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, sees Sierra.ev as a new chapter for a brand that has always stood for more than just transportation – first as a sign of the times, then as an SUV in India’s premium mid-size SUV segment when it was relaunched, and now as Tata’s answer to what a premium electric SUV should be. His core message is that customers don’t have to choose between going electric and having everything they expect from a high-end SUV.

    This commitment is based on three pillars. First up is the cabin experience, which Tata calls a “luxury living space”. Instead of a traditional dashboard, the Sierra.ev features a three-screen Theater Pro setup with a Horizon View display, paired with Dolby Atmos sound, a 12-speaker JBL system, and an additional soundbar for richer audio. There is even in-car gaming available via smartphone via AirConsole, a first for a car sold in India. A head-up display projects 19 different augmented reality visual effects onto the windshield, the suspension automatically adjusts to road conditions, and the panoramic sunroof creates what Tata calls a greenhouse feel. Practical details include a 622-litre boot (the largest in its class), with an electric, gesture-operated tailgate, and an app-based valet system that can park itself or summon it from a car park.

    The second pillar is range and charging, and the automaker is keen to go beyond lab test figures and talk about real-world performance. Sierra.ev’s 75 kWh battery provides over 500 kilometers of real-world range, and fast charging can add approximately 263 kilometers in just 15 minutes, taking the battery charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes. The car also supports vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-vehicle charging, meaning it can power external devices or even another electric car.

    Software plays an important role here too. A smart route planner built into Android Auto helps plan trips around charging stations, an in-car UPI system called DrivePay handles payments, and the car receives continuous over-the-air software updates. It also comes with 22 driver assistance features and a lifetime warranty on the high-voltage battery.

    The third pillar is capability – the idea that electric SUVs don’t have to be soft or limited to cities. Sierra.ev uses a dual-motor all-wheel drive unit that produces 504 Nm of torque and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 5.8 seconds with Boost mode enabled. Six terrain modes cover everything from snow to sand to rock crawling, there is a dedicated off-road assist system and the car offers around 205mm of ground clearance and the ability to restart on slopes steeper than 50%. A 540-degree camera system and “Transparency Mode”, which allows the driver to effectively see through the car in difficult terrain, complete the visibility capabilities.

    Sierra.ev is available in seven colors, including a new shade called Rishikesh Rapids and the exclusive Nainital Nocturne reserved for the top-spec Empowered A QWD model. All in all, Tata aims to deliver an electric SUV that’s adequate for weekend off-road excursions, comfortable enough for daily commuting, and fast enough to be truly exciting to drive.
