How much is the fine for riding a bike on the footpath?
It is seen that under the Motor Vehicles Act, driving a vehicle on footpath or cycle track is considered a violation of rules. In which there are different provisions for this in different states. Generally, on-the-spot or e-challan of Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 can be made for driving or parking a vehicle on the footpath. For example, in Maharashtra, a fine of up to Rs 2,000 is imposed for violation of this rule.
Court action may be taken in Delhi
Whereas in the capital Delhi, driving a bike or other vehicle on the footpath is considered a serious traffic offense. Here in such cases there is no fixed fine but a court challan is issued. If necessary, the vehicle may be seized and the driver may have to appear before a magistrate. If driving on the footpath endangers the safety of a pedestrian or gets injured, then the case may fall under the category of rash driving. In such a situation, there can be a fine of up to Rs 5,000, suspension of driving license for three months or even jail sentence.

Rules will be more strict in Bengaluru
In Bengaluru, the government is preparing to take more stringent measures against those driving on footpaths. In which a proposal has been made and accordingly the existing fine of Rs 500 can be increased to Rs 5,000. Regarding this, the government believes that many people are using the footpath as a shortcut, which is putting the safety of pedestrians at risk.
The figures are also worrying. It has come to light that between January and June 2026, Bengaluru Traffic Police registered 12,032 cases of footpath driving and 83,511 cases of footpath parking. Which simply means that 95,543 traffic violations were reported in just six months. This is why the administration is now emphasizing on making the footpath completely safe for pedestrians.
