Vimag Labs secures fifth patent for magnet-free electric motor technology

Vimag Labs has been granted its fifth patent in India for its proprietary motor technology, marking a significant milestone in the development of next generation electric propulsion systems.

The new patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” protects the core architecture of the company’s Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform.

Unlike traditional permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which rely on fixed rare-earth magnets embedded within the rotor, Vimag Labs’ VMSM technology generates and dynamically controls the magnetic field in real time using advanced power electronics and proprietary software algorithms.

The company says the software-defined approach enables the motor to deliver the performance of traditional permanent magnet motors while eliminating the need for rare-earth magnets. The design is also brushless and slip-ring-free, providing a simpler and potentially more sustainable option for electric mobility and industrial applications.

With this latest approval, Vimag Labs’ intellectual property portfolio now includes five granted patents, ten patent applications under review and fifteen trademark filings. The portfolio spans motor architectures, software-defined control systems, power electronics and application-specific technologies, reinforcing the company’s focus on innovation in advanced electric motor solutions.

commercial deployment

This patent strengthens Vimag Labs’ competitive position as it accelerates commercial deployment. The company currently has active pilot work underway with established two-wheeler and passenger car manufacturers, with plans to expand into light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles and high-power industrial systems ranging from 200 kW to 600 kW. Additional application areas under development include robotics, defense and cooling systems.

For OEMs, the platform offers dual benefits: lower motor costs and freedom from the supply-chain risks of rare-earth magnets, most of which are currently sourced from China. For India, the technology directly supports Make in India and Self-reliant India objectives by enabling indigenous development of critical electric motor technology.

Manish Seth, Co-Founder and CEO, Vimag Labs, said: “This patent is the result of over 87,600 engineering hours. It strengthens every dimension of our commercial roadmap – OEM partnerships, licensing, manufacturing scale-up and future growth.”

He said: “Our long-term vision is to build scalable, software-driven, magnet-free motor systems for global electrification. This innovation strengthens India’s deep-technology base in electric mobility, power electronics, robotics, defense and clean-energy systems.”

Funding and partnerships

Vimag Labs recently raised US$5 million in a Series A round led by Accel with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. The company has also signed a manufacturing MoU with Zendamark Pvt. Ltd. Ltd. to support VMSM production scale-up.

Vimag Labs is a Bengaluru-based deep-technology company that is building a new category of electric motors. Its patented VMSM platform replaces rare-earth permanent magnets with software-defined magnetic fields, providing equivalent or better performance in mobility, industrial and defense applications. The company is expanding operations in India, Europe and the United States.
