Volkswagen Sheep Grass Cutting: Have you ever thought that Volkswagen, one of the world’s leading automobile companies, is employing sheep instead of machines to cut grass in its high-tech factory. Although it sounds like a joke, but by doing this the company has attracted the attention of the whole world. Let us tell you that with the aim of environmental protection, reduction in carbon emissions and reducing operation costs, Volkswagen has deployed a special force of 100 sheep in its huge solar plant. But this initiative is not limited to just cutting grass, there is also a big scientific experiment hidden behind it.

Unique experiment started in Poland’s solar farm

This unique project is going on at the Volkswagen plant in Poznan, Poland where the company manufactures its electric commercial van e-Crafter. It is being informed that more than 31,000 solar panels have been installed here to meet the electricity requirement of the factory. The responsibility of controlling the grass growing under these panels has now been given to sheep instead of machines.

What is Agrivoltaic Technology?

This model is called Agrivoltaics. This means that the same land should be used for two purposes, on the one hand, solar energy production and on the other hand, farming or animal husbandry. This model not only makes better use of land but is also considered beneficial for the environment. Along with this, this 18.3 MW capacity solar plant developed by Berlin-based green firm Quanta Energy fulfills about 25% of the factory’s annual electricity requirement. Many times during summer, this plant alone is capable of providing 100% of the factory’s electricity.

holiday of machines victory of nature

It is seen that due to natural grazing of sheep, the need for lawn mowers running on diesel or petrol has been eliminated. This not only reduces maintenance costs but also reduces carbon emissions significantly. Also, there is no risk of solar panels getting damaged by stones or debris flying from the machines.

Not just grass, sheep are also doing scientific research

Volkswagen has partnered with scientists at the Poznan University of Life Sciences for this project. In which researchers are trying to know whether the shade of solar panels provides relief to sheep from the scorching heat? What positive effect is the presence of sheep having on the soil and vegetation there? And is this setup creating a new ecosystem for local insects and wildlife? Along with this, let us tell you that according to the sheep’s owner Justina Novak-Gajek, the sheep are completely comfortable in this industrial environment and are comfortably grazing on the grass in different groups.

Not only this, according to Marzena Pilich-Gronska, Director, Volkswagen Poznan, “Today this solar farm is not only providing green electricity but has also become a center of biodiversity, local agriculture and scientific research. This sheep project proves that modern industry and nature can work together.” This initiative shows that the industry of the future is moving forward not only on technology but also on sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.
