Epsilon partners with Korea’s Daeju to develop Gen-1 silicon-graphite composite.

Published:

Epsilon Advanced Materials (EAM), is a leading global manufacturer of environmentally conscious lithium-ion battery (LiB) anode and cathode materials. South Korea’s Daeju Electronic Materials (Daeju) is one of the leading global producers of silicon anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LiB).

Epsilon Advanced Materials (EAM) and Daeju have announced a joint development program to develop a silicon-graphite composite (graphite-enriched) by combining Epsilon’s graphite and Daeju’s silicon materials. The companies’ goal is to develop a product that provides better performance and efficiency than the current material technology used in LiB. Japanese trading company Nagase played a role in developing the partnership between the two companies.

Under the joint programme, the companies have set an ambitious target of developing Gen-1 graphite rich silicon composite anode material for LiB with a capacity of 450 – 600 mAh/g, increasing the discharge capacity by 50% and lifetime up to thousands of cycles. Will go.

EAM will supply synthetic graphite, which will be used to fabricate and evaluate SiOx-graphite composites in Daeju’s laboratories. In contrast, Daeju will provide samples for the same purpose, allowing EAM to prepare and test SiOx-graphite composites in its own laboratories. Both companies aim to qualify SiOx-graphite composite materials with their customers to develop innovative products. As per the current program of the External Affairs Minister, the Phase I development and evaluation of SiOx-graphite composite material is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 and then explore the material qualification jointly with cell manufacturers.

Vikram Handa, Managing Director, Epsilon Group, said, “We are excited to announce our partnership with one of the world’s leading producers of silicon anode materials to develop revolutionary battery material technology. This collaboration reflects our dedication to accelerating India’s and global transition to clean energy and sustainable mobility. Through such continuous R&D efforts, we are committed to leading advancements in battery innovation. Upon successful completion of our rigorous in-house evaluation processes, we will be well equipped to meet the growing needs of the mobility industry by providing high performance, safe battery solutions.

Dae Woon Park, Managing Director of Daeju Electronic Materials, said, “This partnership is an important step in our mission to innovate and enhance battery performance. The collaboration with EAM not only strengthens our presence in the fast-growing Indian market but also aligns with our global strategy of developing innovative materials to suit the diverse needs of customers and the market. With EAM, our goal is to develop cutting-edge battery materials that will drive sustainable progress and deliver unique value to our customers and stakeholders.

The silicon-graphite battery material represents a significant advancement in lithium-ion battery technology. By combining the high capacity of silicon with the stability of graphite, these materials provide a superior alternative to traditional graphite anodes, meeting the increasing demands for high performance, long life and fast charging in modern battery applications. This makes them particularly suitable for the emerging needs of the automobile industry and other high power demand sectors.
