EV Home Charging: The craze for electric vehicles is increasing among people in India. Amidst the rising prices of petrol and diesel, people are buying electric cars and scooters in large numbers. But in such a situation, if you are also planning to buy a new EV, then first check the electricity system of your house. A recent report states that about 45 percent of homes in India are not ready for safe charging of electric vehicles. In such a situation, charging EV at home is not only harmful for the vehicle’s battery but can also cause major accidents like short circuit and fire.

Shocking truth revealed in the survey of more than 80 thousand houses

According to the ET report, the survey conducted by Kazam and Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) examined data from more than 80,000 households in tier-1, tier-2 and tier-3 cities of the country. Which also included independent houses, apartments, rented houses and slums. This report revealed that there is a need to upgrade the electrical infrastructure in about 45% of the houses so that safe charging of electric vehicles can be possible there.

Charging EV from normal socket may be costly

It has also been said in the report that to save expenses, many people are charging their electric vehicles from normal electric sockets, extension boards or old wiring connections. For your information, let us tell you that these systems have not been designed to handle the heavy load of EV. Given this, due to such carelessness, the wiring can heat up and catch fire, charging can be interrupted repeatedly and the expensive battery of the vehicle can also get damaged prematurely. Regarding which experts believe that having the right electrical setup for safe charging is as important as buying a good EV.

Follow these important measures for safe charging

Some important suggestions for houses have also been given in the report. In which there should always be a separate dedicated charging circuit and sufficient approved power load for EV charging. Apart from this, it is important to use strong earthing, wiring as per standards, MCB with correct rating and earth-leakage protection device. Experts also recommend installing a separate EV sub-meter so that power consumption can be monitored.

Not only this, it was also told in the report that due to EV in India, the demand for electricity has increased from 0.2% by 2024 to about 6% by 2035. In such a situation, if the country has to move rapidly towards electric mobility, then not only new vehicles but also the electrical infrastructure of homes will have to be improved.
