EV retail sales in India grew 53% in August due to strong two-wheeler and PV demand.

Published:

India’s electric-vehicle (EV) retail sales grew 53% year-on-year in August due to strong growth in electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. However, sales declined sequentially from July, indicating uneven momentum across manufacturers and regions.

According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) data, retail sales of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles stood at 2,98,448 units in August, compared to 1,95,250 units in the same month last year. On a month-on-month basis, volumes fell 9% from 3,27,901 units recorded in July.

FADA said the data was collected from 1,467 of India’s 1,469 regional transport offices on September 4.

Electric two-wheeler sales increased by 67%

Electric two-wheelers were the biggest contributor to India’s EV retail market, with sales growing 67% year-on-year to 1,83,204 units in August.

Their share in total two-wheeler retail sales increased to 10.7% from 7.7% in August 2025, highlighting the continued expansion of electric mobility in this segment.

Established manufacturers posted strong profits during the month. TVS Motor retained its position among the leading players with electric two-wheeler sales up 91% to 48,938 units. Bajaj Auto recorded the strongest growth among major manufacturers, with sales rising 236% to 41,114 units.

Ather Energy’s sales rose 49.7% to 28,757 units, while Hero MotoCorp’s electric two-wheeler sales rose 38% to 19,007 units.

However, Ola Electric bucked the broader industry trend, with retail sales declining 29% year-on-year to 13,852 units.

Electric passenger vehicle sales increased by 52%

Electric passenger-vehicle (PV) sales also recorded strong growth, rising 51.9% year-on-year to 30,696 units in August.

The share of EVs in total passenger-vehicle retail sales during the month stood at 7.6%, compared to 5.8% a year ago.

Tata Motors continued to lead the electric PV segment with 13,158 registrations, showing a growth of 63.2% compared to August 2025. Mahindra recorded a growth of 56.2% with 6,464 electric PV registrations.

Meanwhile, JSW MG Motor sales declined 17.8% to 4,622 units.

This segment also saw contribution from new entrants. Vinfast recorded 2,199 electric passenger-vehicle registrations, while Maruti Suzuki registered 1,412 units.

Electric Three-Wheeler and Commercial Vehicle Sales

Retail sales of electric three-wheelers in August rose 25.3% year-on-year to 79,846 units. Bajaj Auto and Mahindra were among the major manufacturers increasing volumes in this segment.

Electric commercial vehicles recorded the fastest year-on-year growth among major EV categories, with sales rising 188.3% to 4,702 units. Despite rapid percentage growth, the segment is operating from a relatively small base compared to electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

EV market expanding despite gradual decline

The August figures highlight the continued expansion of India’s electric-vehicle market, especially in electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. At the same time, a 9% month-over-month decline in total EV retail sales and significant variations in manufacturer performance point to an increasingly competitive market.

As the market matures, factors such as product availability, manufacturing scale, pricing, delivery strength, and execution may play a larger role in determining the performance of individual manufacturers.

With established automakers strengthening their electric portfolios and the entry of new players in the passenger-vehicle segment, India’s EV market is entering a phase where sustained growth will depend on the ability of manufacturers to compete on a larger scale while meeting growing customer demand.
